Over the Brook Kidron

(2 Sam 15:20f.)

They passed over the brook Kidron,
David and all his men.
‘Twas a wrenching of the heart, indeed,
But necessary to be freed
From the war brought by Absalom;
Had to head toward pagans and slums.
It was bye-bye to Ittai, the Gittite,
But that man wanted to do right.
Said, “Wherever you go, I will be.
I’ll follow you over land and sea.” (21)
So David said, “Go and pass over. (22)
Wherever you are, your servant will be!”
That, to Ittai, was the way to be free.
Well, the whole clan was walking and weeping (23)
Right over the Brook Kidron – no sleeping! (23)
To that wilderness they were on their way (23)
Had that ark of the Covenant to carry all day (24)
