Isaiah 5

(Biblical poetry for the common man)

My well-beloved had a vineyard
Full of fine grapes for wine.
He dug up the dirt real good
And planted the choicest vine;
Put a nice tower in the middle
And watched for that fruit to grow,
But it didn’t, don’t ya know!
Got nothin’ but a bunch o’ duds!
He was mad! Wanted someone to thud!
So he let the weeds come on in.
Didn’t care; nothin’ to ruin!
Said to the rain, “Go away!” (v. 6)
Stay away ’til some other day.
The Lord was lookin’ for that justice,
But didn’t find nothin’ but distress! (7)
His people were a nasty mess.
Got to know whom to hate
And whom to compensate.
