Author of A Time To Kill

The Devil

Devil keeps thrashing at the Church,
Cutting off a leg here, an arm there,
But never quite getting that blow,
The lethal one to the neck!
He just can’t seem to get there.
O but relentless he tries and lies
To himself and everyone, and he cries:
“I’ll cut your throat!  I’ll kill you!”
But he can’t and screams in vain
Knowing that he will suffer that pain
Forever together with the damned
Who were “busy” with their lives crammed
With all manner of fruitless endeavor
(Oh, they thought they were clever!)
That they might break the Law and still,
Chasing all manner of frivolous thrill,
Find some indulgence from the Almighty.
O but how utterly unsightly!
That the Holy One should just look away!
But indeed there was in this some play;
The Father had a plan to work out:
The curse of death the Son would flout!
He would swallow up the sin of the world;
Death on Him would be unfurled!
He would rise again right in that city
On the whole world to show some pity.
