David’s Charge to Solomon
2 Kings 2:7f.
Be kind to the sons of Barzillai,
But not that son of Gera called Shimei.
That boy cursed me with a violent curse (8)
On that day when I went to Mahanaim.
Said, “I won’t put you to death by the sword.
That traitor did us no good,
So don’t let him go without pain.
He’s going down, gonna lose his gain.” (9)
So said David to Solomon his son,
Then he died and was buried in Jerusalem. (10)
Not bad; reigned for forty years: (11)
Seven in the city of Hebron,
Thirty-three in Jerusalem.
Then Solomon sat on the throne of Dave
And he taught the people to behave, (12)
But Adonijah came to Bathsheba,
The mother of the King, Solomon.
She said to that boy, “You come in peace?”
Said, “Yeah, but I got somethin’ to say!” (14)
“You know I’m supposed to be king! (15)
And can you do me a little favor?
There’s a girl I have come to savor.
She’s a Shunammite called Abishag.
Her background is kind of a drag, (17)
But she’s a fox; don’t want no hag!”
“Okay,” said Bath, “I’ll talk to the king.
You know I got a way to pull his string.” (18)
So she went to the king to speak for Adonijah. (19)
The king bowed and said, “How can I do yah?” (19)
“Well,” said she, “Let Abishag marry your brother.”
“What? Can’t she pick another?” (21)
