The Slum Lord

They are easily found around.
Property is purchased and let to sit
To accrue value by association
With the productive neighbors.
They enjoy the increase in value
Brought by the homes of others
Kept up by their labor and care,
While the “lords” lounge and neglect
To maintain their houses, exploiting
The labors of those who keep up
Their homes with responsible diligence.
Yes, derelicts and leeches are about
And they may even flex their clout
In politics and real estate maneuvers,
Ever interested in their own well-being
Giving no concern for the neighbors.
Not a neighborly way to live:
To take from others rather than give.
