What is the case for it for Christians? Are we not part of a new nation, a new\npeople, the “people of God”? \nWhat have we to do with classic nationalism, carved out by geographical,\nlinguistic, and legacy lines? Are Christians\ndoctrinally committed only to those holding Christian citizenship, submission\nto the state as an arm of God benevolent order with no patriotic zeal or\naffection?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
God made extended families along natural lines as a means of\nprocreation and survival. There is a\nnatural commitment to our descendants and to those functioning under a common\ngovernment and speaking a common language. \nSuch commitment serves purposes of survival and protection – the general\nwelfare. To be sure, the stronger bond is the religious one which\nbinds people together by “covenant.” \nIt is a bond stronger than blood or language. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nevertheless, nations, whatever the nature of the bond, are\nGod’s gift and it is right to give Him thanks for whatever nation in which we\nhold citizenship. And for this gift,\npatriotism and national pride emerge and the proper responses to threats against\nthis gift. But let thanksgiving prevail\nover pride. Let allegiance and devotion\nexceed militant aggression. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
