So-called by Clement of Alexandria.\u00a0 It was probably not new to Clement.\u00a0 “It was probably not confined to the Greeks any more than was the Greek of the Gospels and the Creeds.\u00a0 Its proper name is ‘The Eventide Hymn’ or ‘The Hymn for the Lighting of the Lamps’ and was doubtless uttered in the family at ‘candlelight,'” as we say a prayer before a meal.<\/p>\n
It is thus rendered:<\/p>\n
Serene light of the Holy Glory
\nOf the Father Everlasting,
\nJesus Christ:<\/p>\n
Having come to the setting of the sun,
\nAnd seeing the evening light,
\nWe praise the Father and the Son,
\nAnd the Holy Spirit of God.<\/p>\n
It behooves to praise You,<\/p>\n
At all times with holy songs,
\nSon of God, who has given life;
\nTherefore the world glorifies You.<\/p>\n
