In concert with one of the fundamental laws of theological liberalism, the pope is fighting the death penalty.\u00a0 He opposes capital punishment for people who commit capital crimes.\u00a0 Three times in 1996, the pope sought to intercede in U.S. executions.\u00a0 The latest beneficiary, Joseph O\u2019Dell, was convicted of raping, sodomizing, and strangling one Helen Schartner.\u00a0 The pope made appeals to Clinton and Governor George Allen.\u00a0 He was joined in his petition by \u201cDead Man Walking\u201d author Sister Helen Prejean and the Italian government.<\/p>\n
\u00a0George Allen stood tough and was prepared to execute final temporal judgment (he\u2019s 14 and 1 since he took charge in \u201894; we don\u2019t know the conditions surrounding the sole clemency he granted).\u00a0\u00a0 But the U.S. Supreme Court, that fount of many a foul spirit, granted clemency to O\u2019Dell (AP, Richmond, 18 December).<\/p>\n
An AP report from 14 December said that the latest \u201cofficial Roman Catholic teaching holds that capital punishment should be used only if it is absolutely necessary to protect society.\u201d<\/p>\n
Hmm. Does that come from the book of Second Delusions<\/i>, chapter two?\u00a0 Or is it just another profusion from pop theology that one would find at any number of leftist Protestant seminaries across the land where all books but the Scriptures are revered.\u00a0 To point, John Paul said in \u201cEvangelium Vitae\u201d that such cases are \u201cpractically nonexistent.\u201d\u00a0 Indeed, he rejects the biblical justice of capital punishment for capital crimes.\u00a0\u00a0 His doctrine flies in the face of the Christian Church\u2019s historical doctrine and practice.<\/p>\n
